Household budgets are now in the grip of two complementary forces - inflation and shrinkflation.

They are both confronting citizens who, according to polls, now rate the cost of living among their highest concerns.

Blind Freddy could see this was coming but, like all crisis, preventing it merits no kudos. Instead, government will make the problem bigger while pretending to address it.
