This week is marked by tragedy and will forever be recorded in the annals of Australian history. It gives all Australians cause to stop and reflect on all that we hold precious.
The fires that have ravaged the state of Victoria have affected us all, either through direct impact on family and friends, or because we have been exposed to the horror experienced by others through the media.
Mere words cannot comfort the bereaved and the injured. Similarly, for those of us who have not been directly involved it is difficult to comprehend the full extent of the catastrophe.
We know there has been a significant loss of life and property. We know that entire communities and towns have been destroyed. We also know that the personal and public costs of these fires are almost unimaginable.
But in the midst of tragedy, there is always hope. The tales of survival, the courage and heroism shown by so many, will leave a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to come.
That inspiration is already working within the Australian people. Across our great land, millions of Australians are donating their time, money and produce to bushfire disaster relief. Their efforts demonstrate the wonderful sense of community, the empathy and charity that exists in our great nation.
When our fellow man is suffering and in pain, Australians rally to the cause.
Whilst sparing whatever we can for this worthy cause, let us also pray for those who are lost. Let us pray that the injured may find relief from their pain, and let us pray for all those who have been affected by this tragedy.
We should also give thanks to the thousands of volunteers and professionals who have risked their lives to help others. It is a timely reminder that we all have a role to play in supporting our neighbours, whether they be next door, across the street or across the nation.
