The Real Cost of Corona

Despite being told we are all in this together, we aren't. One group of people are shouldering a much bigger burden than others but it will cost us all dearly in the long run.

The Real Cost of Corona

We are being punished twice thanks to Coronavirus.

In the short term, not only have our lives have been upended by business closures, travel restrictions and job losses, those of us paying taxes are supporting a bureaucracy that has shared none of the financial pain.

Our public servants (including our politicians) have been enjoying full pay and benefits while ‘working from home’. That’s a very loose term because we all know that ’working from home’ is different to actually being at work.

Our Federal parliament is not sitting, many political offices are closed and community events are virtually non-existent. It becomes a little hard to justify the thirty thousand dollar per month package our backbench politicians enjoy under those conditions.

It’s a similar story with our Commonwealth public service. Some of them are working very hard but there must be plenty of room to trim the costs while many departments are running on skeleton staff.

After all, they keep saying we are all in this together but only some of us are financially impacted.

It’s little wonder the attractiveness of employment in the public service holds more appeal for many than private enterprise. There is more job security, the perks are better and there is next to no risk.

It’s even worse for business owners. They have much higher financial risk and battle the associated stress that accompanies putting it all on the line every single week.

The anti-capitalists will have us believe that business owners are modern day robber barons - exploiting the workers for profit. Overwhelmingly, that is directly opposite to the real world.

Sure, it’s a given that business needs to make a profit and that means every employee needs to financially pull their weight. It’s also better to take preventative measures to ensure the continued viability of the entity when necessary rather than lose everything.

But that doesn’t mean business owners are exploiting their staff. Employers I know often shoulder the financial burdens of their employees too and they feel a deep obligation to them.

The harder we make it for business, the harder we make it for ourselves. Business provides jobs outside of the public service, they generate the taxes to support our social programs, they build wealth and prosperity that the marxists covet.

And that’s how we will really be paying twice for the impact of Coronavirus. Not only are we shouldering the financial impact of today, with every business closure we will be feeling the effects for decades to come.

Unless of course, you are safely cocooned  ’working from home’ at taxpayers expense.
